  Network Rail appointed tp bennett to continue their earlier work on London Bridge Station and develop a Reference Design (NR GRIP 3) which accommodated change in NR requirements and acknowledged the influence of new developments instigated since planning consent was achieved (2003).

  Key elements of the new NR brief were: to remove the over-site office development, which in turn enabled the complex concrete supports to be replaced with standard NR bridge stuctures; to remove the mezzanine interchange deck to allow passenger flows to be more effectively controlled; to reduce the retail to a core provision.

  The revised design still includes a concourse 70m wide x 175m long between Tooley Street and St Thomas' Street, slicing through the existing vaults to provide an effective urban connection between the riverside area and the less developed areas south of the station.  This also enabled a direct connection to the London Underground station, all at ground level.

  The two predominately gleazed-ends of the concourse clearly reveal the layout and movement patterns within the station and help sign the presence of the station in its urban context.  The triangular lattice framing that cloaks the entrance elevations makes reference to the diagonal railway structures which traditionally span the large openings in the rail infrastructure, whilst maintaining the strong curved vertical plane of the existing vaulted viaduct face.

  Large slots in each platform enable vertical circulation and natural light into the concourse below.  Vaulted ceilings below the track bridges maximise the height above the concourse within which the main pedestrian movements take place.  In the centre of the station concourse, a large opening gives access to the terminus above and provides dramatic views of the Shard for passengers connecting with buses and taxis.
