In 2011 the British Council for Offices (BCO) launched a design competition to explore the future identity of the workplace. The environment selected to test these ideas was an uninhabited island off Cornwall, approximately 10km x 25km.
The brief required the multi-disciplinary design teams to develop a living, workplace and energy strategy for a community of 6,000 - 10,000 people, engaged in highly secretive work for a global media company. In collaboration with AECOM, tp bennett developed ideas for a new workplace community with new technology to allow employees to escape from their desks and choose when and where to work.
Competing against 28 teams, tp bennett/AECOM were selected to present live to the judges at the 2011 BCO Conference in Geneva, where we were awarded first prize. The presentation culminated in a live broadcast from the engineers on the island.
Although the competition proposal outlines some radical new ideas unlikely to become reality, the themes underpinning the design work focused on addressing real and pertinent issues affecting the modern workplace and those who use it.
