One of the most successful primary schools in the London Borough of Haringey, Tetherdown’s planned expansion from one to two form entry faced a number of challenges. The existing school building, which was to be retained, was late Victorian in date, a serviceable structure but with inadequate circulation space, small classrooms and a lack of external play areas. With the school doubling in size, its governors were anxious that the strong sense of community and learning values were maintained.
tp bennett’s design was developed to reflect this “whole school” ethos, while addressing the need to radically update Tetherdown’s facilities in line with current educational criteria and provide buildings suitable for extended community use outside school hours. A new hub building, containing the main staircase, hall, staffroom and catering facilities, acts as a hinge between the new eight classroom teaching block and the existing school. It is a social as well as a practical link, providing a sense of cohesion for the school community. The existing school building has been refurbished to provide more generously scaled, flexible classroom spaces within the existing envelope.
The external landscape was expanded to offer varied play areas close to their related classrooms, especially for the infant classes, external classrooms, grassed and hard play areas and an outside amphitheatre.
The scheme was carefully designed to allow construction work to be phased so the school could continue its normal operations while the project progressed.
